The Motherwell Hunting Lodge offers more than 12,000 acres of pristine elk habitat on private land just outside of Hayden in Northwest Colorado. This area plays home to one of the largest elk herds in all of North America. Here you will enjoy an adventurous and exciting elk hunting experience as the elk are plentiful and active. Our expansion of private land and superior habitat provides guests with various opportunities for a successful harvest.
We cater to every interest and hunting is available throughout the general Colorado Elk Seasons as well as through a special cooperative program termed "Ranching for Wildlife". The following elk hunting options are available to our guests:
ARCHERY ELK // MOTHERWELL
Dates: Available between August 25 - September 23, 2018
Hunt Package: 5 nights, 4 days. $6,500
License: There is no draw required for either sex archery elk license. Available over the counter.
Description: If you enjoy archery hunting, you will LOVE hunting with the guides at the Motherwell Ranch (because we love it to!). This is a fantastically fun hunt as the elk are numerous, active and in the rut. The action is endless and you will be in the elk, every day.
MUZZLELOADER ELK // MOTHERWELL
Dates: Available between September 6 - September 16, 2018
Hunt Package: 5 nights, 4 days. Hunt Package: 5 nights, 4 days. $6,500
License: Limited. Draw is required for muzzleloading license.
Description: Excellent opportunities exist for the muzzleloading hunter as the elk are in the rut and receptive to calls.
1st RIFLE SEASON ELK // MOTHERWELL
Dates: Available between October 13 - October 17, 2018
Hunt Package: 6 nights, 5 days. $7,500
License: Limited. Draw is required for 1st season rifle elk.
Description: All elk seasons are exceptional at the Motherwell Ranch, and none are necessarily better than the others. However, the 1st rifle season does present the first opportunity with a rifle and the elk have predominantly been un-pressured throughout the September archery season.
2nd RIFLE SEASON ELK // MOTHERWELL
Dates: Available between October 20 - October 28, 2018
Hunt Package: 5 nights, 4 days. $6,500
License: There is no draw required for 2nd rifle season elk license. Available over the counter.
Description: All elk seasons are exceptional at the Motherwell Ranch, and none are necessarily better than the others. During the second season we generally will start to have a little snow on the ground and the elk are relatively easy to find.
3rd RIFLE SEASON ELK // MOTHERWELL
Dates: Available between November 2 - November 12, 2018

License: There is no draw required for 2rd rifle season elk license. Available over the counter.
Description: All elk seasons are exceptional at the Motherwell Ranch, and none are necessarily better than the others. During the third season we generally have snow on the ground and the elk have grouped up a little bit in anticipation of their winter migration.
FREE RANGE ELK HUNTS
This region plays home to one of the largest elk herds in North America. The State of Colorado manages this herd for quantity, therefore the elk are plentiful and active. On average guests can expect to harvest a nice 5x5 bull elk. We provide this as an average because some guests harvest smaller than 5x5 bulls and some guests harvest larger 6x6 bulls. Opportunities do exist for bigger bulls that are 300" or bigger, but cannot be represented as an average. Maybe you will be the lucky one! Hunting elk in this region is not typically clasified as a trophy hunt opportunity - rather a fun, exciting and rewarding elk hunting experience.
